It’s called “REINING the Fundamentals of Judging” from NRHA and I can’t wait to watch it. Mike had an older copy he was kind enough to sit down with me and watch a bit of so I could get the basic idea of what perfect maneuvers are.

It covers the definition of reining, maneuver scoring, penalty application and scoring live runs. You can buy it for $64.95 from the NRHA website.

Can’t wait to start watching it tonight and absorbing the info! I hear they have a pretty neat judges program as well!

I’m continuing with my series on fun ways to transform traditional horse show tail gate and concession eating experiences into a health conscious and even gourmet encounters. I’ve been playing with cutting out as much refined sugar from my diet as possible and seeing that almost everything has sugar or high fructose corn syrup of some sort that’s a bit challenging. This recipe is my cobbler recipe replacing the sugar for honey. When replacing sugar with honey it’s best to use a tad less because honey is naturally sweeter. I do like the dough to be a bit more crisp than this recipe turned out so I might experiment next time with adding some room temp melted butter to the actual dough.

You’ll need a few basic ingredients that you’ll likely have around the house already. In regards to honey, I hear if you eat honey local to your region it can help with any allergies you might have come springtime. So we stock up when possible at the local fruit stands.

Working with frozen fruit is easy but show season is typically spring and summer when lots of great local fresh fruits abound so I prefer to bake with fresh fruit and in this case, local fruit stand peaches and blueberries.

Now I’m not suggesting to go out and spend money on a toaster oven if you don’t already have one but back in the day living at the stable with just the viewing room to prepare food I ended up purchasing a convection toaster oven which does come in handy on hot summer months when I don’t want to pre-heat the full sized oven (which in the summer is almost never) and save a bit on the energy usage as well. I have this toaster oven and it has worked great for me the last 4 years! So pre-heat your oven to 375F.

I put the stick of butter in my baking dish and let it melt inside the preheating oven. Below are the basic ingredients you’ll need.
1 stick (4 ounces) butter, melted
        3/4 cup honey
        1 cup all-purpose flour
        2 teaspoons baking powder
        1/4 teaspoon salt
        1 cup milk
        1 teaspoon vanilla extract
4 ripe peaches, peeled, pitted, cubed
        1 cup blueberries
        1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt topping with the honey and blend well. Stir in the milk and vanilla until blended. Pour the batter over the melted butter in your baking dish. Toss the peaches and blueberries in and dash the top with 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Bake for approximately 35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the cake comes out clean. The top will be browned and the cake will begin to pull away from the sides of the pan slightly.

Now for horse show prep, I like to bake in a dish that comes with its own cover and will sit well in the cooler. This is usually an arrival night dessert after a long day of traveling or will keep well until lunch or dinner the next day too.

Enjoy and success in your competitions!

Here’s a clip from the examiner.com about the Parelli exihibition that when so very wrong.

The British are famous for their great love of animals, particularly dogs and horses, and it’s not surprising that they are among the most progressive countries in the world with regards to animal welfare. Many equestrians in Great Britain have embraced the natural horsemanship movement which puts the horse’s needs first and foremost.

But last Friday at the 2010 Royal Festival of the Horse, British students of natural horsemanship were left speechless and uncomfortable, if not downright angry, by a demonstration conducted by Pat Parelli, with some assistance from his wife Linda Parelli.

Generally when a natural horsemanship show comes to town, they solicit in advance for ‘problem horses’ to use in their demos. One of the problem horses selected for the 2010 Royal Festival of the Horse Parelli demo was a young stallion named Catwalk, owned by British show jumper Robert Whitaker. Catwalk’s ‘problem’ was that he was nearly impossible to bridle. Apparantly Robert Whitaker owned Catwalk for only two months before the Parelli demo, and it’s not clear what possible mishandling or abuse he may have endured in the past. Most trainers would not have attempted to rehabilitate such a horse to accept the bridle in an afternoon’s time. A horse exhibiting extreme distrust and fear needs time and space to be rehabilitated, and certainly no one should be in a hurry to ride a horse with an obvious fear related to being handled by humans until the trust issues can be resovled.

But, for whatever reason, Parelli Natural Horsemanship chose this particular problem horse for their demo, and it seems clear from spectator’s comments and the video that Pat Parelli was in way over his head, and desperate to resolve the problem then and there, regardless of the means required to accomplish his goals, which included the perceived abandonment of his own principles of natural horsemanship!
Here’s a letter from Parelli in response to the uproar:

Change that “ugh” to “ooh” with new FITS Wunderbreech™ and hide any embarrassing looks when wearing white or light colored breeches. Wunderbreech is a flattering blend of cotton, poly and Lycra® in a capri length that shapes and hides what you’d prefer not be seen. Our highly opaque fabric blend fills in cellulite lines and hides skin blemishes. Wunderbreech also features a seamless, gusseted crotch for maximum comfort. The capri length eliminates unsightly panty lines and is cooler than full length designs which add bulk under boots. You’ll like them so much that you’ll want to wear them every time you ride. You will love the way breathable Wunderbreeches feel next to your skin under any breech, white or not.

“We developed the Wunderbreech in response to consumer input that unlined white breeches of any brand are simply unflattering. Wunderbreech provides a comfortable base layer to be worn under any breech to insure a highly opaque (not see through) look. It also does a superb job of camouflaging cellulite and skin imperfections.” states Sheryl Rudolph, Founder and President of FITS.

For a limited time introductory offer FITS is offering a free Wunderbreech with every new order of FITS Energy Rib White Full Seat breech. Suggested retail price is $32.00. Available at fine tack stores and online through FITS valued dealer network at www.FITSRiding.com beginning August 2010.

These look super comfy:

Life with 2 horses, 2 dogs, 2 cats, 2 ducks and 1 Marine is definitely an animal farm but not really the one George Orwell had in mind. It’s a blast watching the ducks try and fly, crazily chance bugs about back and forth in their yard. The kitty loves tormenting Picollo and Zita daily and they seem to enjoy the antics almost as much. It’s a riot to see the cat, Lil Dude, trot like a lion along the fence line as a momma bird dive bombs him all the way to the horse trailer! Carrara always welcomes me with a light whinny as I walk out the front door, especially when she knows it’s feeding time and little Picollo in general is just the “best paralyzed doxy on the planet” no joke!

Here’s early morning “Let’s PLAY” from the kitty!

And this is what happens when paint is in the same rubbish as chicken bits.

So while you won’t be hearing the sheep from the hay barn chanting “Four legs gooooood. Two legs baaaaad.” you will hear the cicadas churping a chorus in the trees, the occasional whinny, a defensive bark and the quacks from Dooney & Burke and I’d define that as an animal farm and my own personal paradise too!

Some of the walls in my office have undergone a reworking with new drywall and once that was all finished a nice bright color has followed. I went with Valspar’s 3001-1B “Dandelion Wish” and it’s fabulous! The trim color is Valspar’s 3001-2C “Champagne Tickle” and viewing the finished product, I’m tickled beyond delight and all my wishes of a fabulous new look to the HorseGirlTV® studio office have been fulfilled. We just need to get the art and photography up and all set!

Or course Carrara didn’t care either way but the view out the window to her is MUCH improved. Do note the adorable baby picture in the black frame on the shelf behind my desk! And also my Aunt Roberta’s horse clock! It’s many, many years old and I’m so happy she passed it on to me. RIP Aunt Roberta!

Of course a bright new office deserves some wacky furniture and I was thinking this foot stool goes quite well with the farm and horse girl theme. What do you think? Send me your thought to the HorseGirlTV Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/HorseGirlTV/127250575050

To get to the other side and to get published on the HorseGirlTV blog of course! I put Carrara out in one of the side paddocks when it had cooled down in the afternoon and she wouldn’t stop starring at the arena. Wondering what was so fascinating, I walked over to see a massive snapper was crossing the dressage court! Seriously this guy/gal (whatever) was a little over a foot long and had a quick snap!

Ah the fun things that one finds on farms in this state! It’s always a interesting out here!

We have winners in the Draper Tale of the Traveling Polo Contest! Thanks to everyone who entered!! Thanks to the awesome folks at Draper (http://draperequinetherapy.com) for providing the polos!

The 1st winner of the Tale of the Traveling Polo Contest is Lisa Arney. Lisa had this to say, ” I have been an avid Dressage rider and Trainer with my mother for years and now am converting to Cutting. I would love the opportunity to use them on my FEI dressage horse and my National level cutting mare. What an opportunity to see them in action in two very strenuous sports. I feel protecting the legs on our performance horses should come first. Fortunetly in Cutting we are allowed to show with them on what a great way to promote your product I will promise action pictures with them on.” CONGRATS Lisa! We can’t wait to see great action shots of both your dressage and cutting horses!

The 2nd winner and next in line for the Draper Tale of the Traveling Polo Contest is Lisa Marie McGee Afshari. Lisa submitted this info with her listing, “I would like to suggest my therapeutic riding center as a place for Draper to test new polos. I have several old horses donated to Ready Set Ride, Plainefield, Illinois who are all in need of leg support due to injuries and types of unbalanced riders on board. My guys could use all the support they can get.” CONGRATS to you also Lisa! We hope your working therapeutic horses that have the opportunity to trial the polos enjoy them very much!

Our 3rd winner and next in line for the Draper Tale of the Traveling Polo Contest is Thresa Cunningham-Bailey. Thresa entered, “I would love to win some of the new polos! I know that you feature mainly dressage/hunter/jumpers – but there are a lot of barrel racers that use polos too and our horses put a lot of strain on their legs – so reach out to the horses that really get down in the dirt!!!” Congrats Thresa! WOW! Barrels! We’re looking forward to seeing some great action shots of those tight barrel turns in the fabulous Draper Polos!

A big congrats to all our winners and thanks to everyone who participated! Stayed tuned to the HorseGirlTV Facebook page this coming week as we launch another FABULOUS contest where we’ll be giving away a FREE ANNUAL SUBSCRIPTION to Bernie Traurigs Equestrian Coach (http://equestriancoach.com)!

Nope this is not going to be a politically driven rant about British Petroleum. It’s going to be short, sweet and to the point. I woke up this morning, sat up and looked at the email on my iPhone. I read this from the awesome inventor of the Shake n’ Fork…

“Does the fork in the photo look familiar? It should, its the one you sent back to me with a different basket made for sifting tarballs. According to BP it is the most effective hand tool that has ever been presented to them for collecting tarballs from beaches and they are actually buying them from me. I am down here in Alabama demonstrating it to the contractors in the area and it makes me so proud to see the yellow forks riding in the back of the sand buggies when they go to the beaches in the morning.”

I was SO over-joyed I had tears in my eyes! This amazing inventor of the Shake n’ Fork, Mr. Joesph Berto, had done it! The “most effective hand tool that have even been present to them for collecting tarballs” was just ringing in my ears. To me, this was THE turning point in this whole BP fiasco and the success of Mr. Berto’s invention on another platform, well, it couldn’t have happened to a nicer person truly looking for ways to innovate. Not only is the Shake n’ Fork the most effective stall cleaning tool I’ve worked with but now it’s going to help thousands of people and the environment on the Gulf Coast! Awesome! I love win-win situations!

If you want to see the exact same Shake n’ Fork in this picture below actually in action on HorseGirlTV go to http://www.horsegirltv.com/blog/?p=1358 and here’s the wonderful picture he attached to the email this morning showing the workers testing it out!

Kudos to someone at BP for finally making a decent decision that really can and will help Gulf Coast residents!

So we have a pretty open air barn which is great in the summer time and it’s fabulous that the horses can watch the sun go down from their stalls but dang it, it’s HOT sometimes in the afternoons in Eastern North Carolina! We recently put up the awesome Horse Fly Nets (check em out online at http://horseflynet.com/) which are geared towards eliminating flies but they also do a great job of blocking the heat of the sun while still being able to have a great view. It was easy to hang and the horses took an extra look at it ONCE then were over it and now we brush past them when turning out and nobody cares.

And of course the view is shaded but still a fabulous sunset to watch and enjoy in much cooler barn temps!

Check them out as they are a neat company and the innovator, Karleen, is a HorseGirl as well!

So I’ve been thinking of horse show and clinic friendly cooking this summer. I ask myself, what will pack/travel well yet be appetizing in the midday heat of horse shows. The same old, same old of PB&J with bottled water just doesn’t cut it sometimes and I’m often tempted to buy a greasy (albeit often tasty and supportive of the event) cheese burger. In the heat that 1/4 pound of meat just sits at the bottom of my stomach like a ton of bricks.

I thought it would be fun to test out different salad and sandwich options and work on being a little creative so here’s my first stab at it. We’ll be taking these tasty treats along to the Carolina Reining Futurity show this weekend!

Chicken Curry Croissant Sandwich:
2 cooked whole chicken breasts, food processed
1/4 cup nuts (I use a variety), food processed
    1/4 cup craisins (or raisins)
4 celery stalks (no need to de-string), food processed
Salt to your liking (I put 1/2 tsp.)
    4 Tbsp. Mayonnaise
Curry powder to your liking (I put 1 tsp.)
8 Croissants (cut in half with serrated knife for cleanest cut)

In a large bowl, combine chicken, nuts, craisins, celery, salt, mayonnaise, and stir until well blended. Add curry powder. Blend well and store in sealable container until ready to load up! Don’t forget your pre-cut croissants & a spoon.

This stays chilled well in the cooler and is easy to prepare from your trailer, tack room or even ringside!

Instead of just bottled waters, treat yourself to a little southern health friendly sweet iced tea! I make a caffeine free raspberry tea and sweeten with agave nectar. I’ve been working on cutting out as much refined sugar as possible and this is a GREAT natural sweetener (Thanks Tanya!). Unlike refined sugar is has low glycemic index. I make a 6 cups concentrated tea in a mason jar, sealed well and just water it down in my cup straight from the hose in the barn aisle!

Happy showing and blue ribbons all around!
